Thus, electrical machinery and equipment must be thoroughly inspected for compliance with local standards as well as application-specific standards before commissioning. Concerning power supply, the Underwriter Laboratories (UL) and the CSA are responsible for defining and publishing the relevant norms and standards for the North American market. These are used to test and certify the safety of a large number of products in a wide variety of sectors. The certificates are used in many parts of the world beyond the North American continent. In addition to electrification, UL standards are also significant in numerous other areas, such as equipment safety or fire protection. In the electrical engineering sector, a distinction must be made between three classic fields of UL certification:
The NEC area primarily includes UL types for the standardization of wires and cables. Of decisive importance here is the National Electrical Code (NEC), which defines the place and type of application of the respective cables. The area of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) includes standards for the legally compliant installation of electronic equipment. This includes the requirements that it must meet in terms of design, wiring, grounding, operation, labeling, and testing in order to comply with fire protection standards, for example.
The classic UL area primarily describes the areas of UL-Appliance Wire Material (UL-AWM) and UL types. UL types are the identifying code on the cable that provides information on the product designation and the UL-certified core properties of the cable. Thus, UL types cover the standardization of products for power supply from transformer or socket to the end device. UL Appliance Wire Material, in turn, covers the certification of components associated with the inner workings of an electronic device.
